Breaker Morant was the epitome of an Aussie battler, and his story is still told today.
If Breaker Morant was my relative, I would be shattered by the horrifying news of unwarranted arrestment and later execution due to his co-accused shooting of 20 people. The fact that he was suspected was punishment enough, as there was little credited evidence against his innocence. Breaker Morant was undoubtedly made a scapegoat by the devilish Lord Kitchner, whose sole purpose was to assert his power over his soldiers. The killing itself was one of the most undignified actions in my living memory, both Breaker Morant and his co-worker, Handcock, were brutally executed by the firing squad, an utterly counter intuitive and hypocritical act. The worst part of the incident was the lack of relative’s knowledge of Breaker’s execution, he was dealt with before he had any chance to defend himself, and neither me, nor his other relatives had any time to say goodbye. Breaker will be remembered as a legend, a poet, a soldier, a horseman and a great friend, to see his death come so prematurely and in such a way is deeply dismaying.
